When concluding the meeting, either ask for the feedback to be documented and shared or suggest writing some quick follow-up notes and sharing those. It’s never easy to defend your decisions, especially when the person questioning you is in a senior position. Take what you know about the people you work with and use it to your advantage. Based on what you know about your colleagues, you should be able to anticipate how they might react to your ideas.

How Does Being a Better Communicator Help a Designer?

Problems focus on real-world communication and interactivity problem-solving within the current Internet standards and practices. Communication design incorporates the elements of great graphic design and takes things a step further by considering the way audiences understand visuals. Good communication skills are essential for any designer—whether you’re working on a freelance basis or as part of an in-house team. No matter what your role is within a design team, being able to communicate well is essential to success. After all, design is a collaborative process, and being able to share your ideas clearly (and listen to others’ ideas just as carefully) is key to coming up with the best possible solutions.

Some designers chose humor, like when Schick created a series of men sporting literal ‘beastly’ beards of animals to encourage men to shave. Or they can be weird yet practical, like when Ikea designed an ad for a new crib that also doubled as a pregnancy test. Or they can be inspirational, like when Shanghai General Motors created a campaign raising awareness for car safety by using real accident victims to get the earnestness of the message across.

Most stakeholders and clients don’t fully understand the work involved in designing a site or an app. Explaining your approach to the design process and your proposed solution or any issues or challenges you foresee will go a long way to helping cure HIPPO syndrome. It’s a combination of education, information, and evangelizing all at the same time. Always keep in mind that every design plays a part, contributing to a visual language that captures attention, informs, and inspires.

In addition to classes taken within the DMA department, students complete a series of general education courses and are encouraged to take other electives from the university to broaden their experience. A complete list of all DMA classes with descriptions is available in the UCLA General Catalog and individual class websites can be found on the DMA Classes website. This uniquely challenging and diverse program invites students to balance aesthetic sensibility with logical reasoning, formal theories with practical application, and contemporary thought with historical perspective.

In addition to the required application materials, students who apply to Communication Design may submit an optional portfolio. Please note that it’s impossible to predict – or guarantee – what credentials a student will need to gain admission into DAAP, because the size and quality of the applicant pool varies each year..
